We transcribe police statements (recording in FTR audio/video). In some of the recordings from our client (from a new station), we do not get audio on our 5.1 players, but by upgrading to 5.6 we do. Unfortunately some of our XP SP3 computers we cannot upgrade - the process halts after uninstalling the old version and we get a "error 1601 windows installer error" - with none of the standard fixes working (ie using the fix-it utility, doing a full clean uninstall prior, changing the registry and other answers regarding this issue that I've tried exhaustively). Note that it is only the 5.6 install that is a problem.
Using system restore we can get a partial recovery of the 5.1 and then a full reinstall of 5.1 at that point does get us back to where we started.
The install has worked fine on some identical computers, and all our Vista/Win7 installs have worked with w/o hitch.
At this point though the computers with 5.1 are rendered useless in trying to transcribe these "newer" recordings, of which I'm not sure what version of FTR is being used, I'm assuming a newer "interrogator", however from what I understand 5.6 is not even supposed to work with that. If there is something they can do at their end, I can contact them to make the change, however I would need to be able to give them very specific instructions, so looking for that help here.
At this point looking for remedies:
- has anyone run into this problem and found a solution in the installation process?
- is there a setting at the recording end to ensure that the audio will work in older versions (ie 5.1 player)?
- is there a audio codec or some other fix as far as getting the audio to work in the 5.1 (or older) versions? (this would be the "best" solution - in comparing codecs between computers using 5.1 and 5.6 I don't see any difference, so not sure what is missing).
