error occurs launching the open dialogue

I purchased a new PC two weeks ago, running Windows 8.  I installed Log Notes and Record Player and have used it every day since.  Today I downloaded and installed the Windows 8.1 update and now Player won't work.  I had created a restore point so I went back to before the 8.1 update.  Still won't work.  I get a message "Error occurred launching the open dialogue" and it indicates error code 0x80040154.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled Player but get the same message.  I have approximately 1500 pages to transcribe right now.  HELP.
